Inheritance in genetic terms means an offspring, or child (like you) receiving certain traits, behavior, or characteristics from your mum and dad. Our parent&#8217;s genes will determine what we will look like.<\/span><\/p><h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">What is an Allele?<\/span><\/h3><p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Sometimes, there are different forms of genes from the same person. These are called\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Alleles<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0(say a-leel).<\/span><\/p><p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">To explain this further, let us use specific examples.<\/span><\/p><p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Let us say you have blue eyes. It would be very likely that your mum or dad also had blue eyes. If even they didn\u2019t, the genes in their cells have blue eye traits \u2014 which they have passed on to you.<\/span><\/p><p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Genes determine our eye color. Eye genes usually come in two alleles: an allele for brown eyes and an allele for blue eyes. We all have a pair of alleles that determine our eye color.<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><ul><li><i><b><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">An individual who carries two copies of the same allele is homozygous.<\/span><\/b><\/i><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><ul><li><i><b><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">An individual who carries two different<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> alleles for a certain gene are heterozygous.<\/span><\/b><\/i><\/li><\/ul><p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">So here are some possibilities of eye color below:<\/span><\/p><ul><li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A person with two blue alleles will have blue eyes.<\/span><\/li><li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A person with two brown alleles will have brown eyes.<\/span><\/li><li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A person with one blue allele and one brown allele will have\u2026 Brown Eyes!<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Yes, this is because brown alleles are <i><b>dominant alleles<\/b><\/i>. Alleles can be dominant or\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">recessive<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Sometimes, a child can have blue eyes even though their mum and dad have brown eyes.
