style=\"letter-spacing: 0px;\">One function of the organism&#8217;s home (habitat or environment) is to provide the ideal temperature in which the organism can thrive.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px;\">Humans have a way of helping themselves if it gets too cold or too hot. But this is not so for every living thing. If it is too cold or too hot, some plants will struggle to survive.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px;\">This is true for animals too. An ideal temperature is important because extreme temperatures can wipe out an entire ecosystem.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px;\">Temperature is affected by water, air, soil, and sunlight.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px;\">Temperatures are not the same everywhere on earth. Some regions, such as the north and south poles are very cold (\u201388\u00b0C or -126.4\u00b0F). Other regions such as the tropics can get very warm (up to about 50\u00b0C or 122\u00b0F). Animals that are adapted to cold temperatures cannot survive in warm temperatures.<\/span><\/p><h3><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px;\">Plants:<\/span><\/h3><p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Some places are just too cold for plants to survive. These include high mountain peaks such as those in the mountains of British Columbia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h3><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px;\">Animals:<\/span><\/h3><p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Think of the brook trout \u2014 it prefers water temperatures between 4\u00b0C or 39.2\u00b0F and 20\u00b0C or 68\u00b0F and will only lay eggs when the water temperature is below 13\u00b0C. Animals like polar bears and penguins are adapted to thrive only in extremely cold climates. They will not survive if they end up in a hot, dry tropical climate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px;\">Metabolic and enzyme activities in animals require the right temperatures to occur or such processes can slow down and affect that living organism.<\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Some fishes also thrive only in the shallow warm waters of tropical seas, where temperatures are warm all year through.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div
