data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Ozone is a natural gas composed of three atoms of oxygen. Its chemical symbol is\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">O3<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. It is blue and has a strong odor. Normal oxygen (<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">O2<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">), which we breathe, has two oxygen atoms and is colorless and odorless. Environmental scientists have classified\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">O3<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0into two: Good Ozone and Bad Ozone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Good Ozone\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p><p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7366\" src=\"https:\/\/eschooltoday.com\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/types-of-ozone.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eschooltoday.com\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/types-of-ozone.jpg 600w, https:\/\/eschooltoday.com\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/types-of-ozone-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/>Good ozone<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">(also called Stratospheric Ozone)<\/span><\/em><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0occurs naturally in the upper Stratosphere. The stratosphere is the layer of space 6 to 30 miles above the earth&#8217;s surface.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><strong><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Where does good Ozone come from?<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p><p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The air is full of gases reacting with each other, even though our eyes do not see. When UV light strikes (Oxygen) O2 molecules, they are split into two individual O atoms \u2014 O and O. When one of the O atoms combines with the O2 molecule, Ozone (O3) is created.<\/span><\/p><p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7367\" src=\"https:\/\/eschooltoday.com\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Ozone-molecules.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"238\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eschooltoday.com\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Ozone-molecules.jpg 600w, https:\/\/eschooltoday.com\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Ozone-molecules-300x119.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/>Even though Ozone is only a small part of the gases in this layer, it plays a vital role because it shields us from the sun&#8217;s harmful UV rays. It is called Good Ozone, for obvious reasons\u2014because it protects humans, life, and animals on earth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Bad Ozone\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p><p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Bad Ozone is also known as<\/span><strong><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0Tropospheric Ozone<\/span><\/em><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0or ground-level ozone. This gas is found in the troposphere, the layer that forms the immediate atmosphere. Bad Ozone does not exist naturally. Human actions cause chemical reactions between oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOC).\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><strong><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Where does bad ozone come from?<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p><p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Each time there is a reaction of chemicals such as those found in cars, power plants, and factory emissions, in the presence of sunlight (UV light), Bad Ozone is created.<\/span><\/p><p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Bad ozone contaminates (dirties) the air and contributes to what we typically experience as smog or haze.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Note that this kind of smog is different from the\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">deadly London winter type that killed 4000 people.<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0Smog from bad ozone is usually in the summer, caused by the action of sunlight on a mixture of hydrocarbons and oxides of nitrogen.
